May Home Maintenance Tips

Happy May! We welcome spring flowers, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day and the unofficial start of summer-Memorial Day. We endured big rain storms in April to give way to the flowers and warmer weather in May. Use these practical tips to keep your home maintained, fresh, and healthy. In turn, you will stay healthy. A good way to keep the value of your home up is to keep it maintained. Buyers appreciate seeing in the property listing “meticulously maintained”.

  • Prune trees and shrubs – trees and shrubs grow quickly in the spring as the weather warms up and they are get a good amount of rain. Keeping them trimmed will keep your lawn looking tidy but also prevent paths from looking overgrown and keep them from rubbing on your home.
  • Clean kitchen exhaust fan filter – help properly ventilate your kitchen and prevent fire.
  • Oil garage-door opener and chain, garage door, and all door hinges – the weather is warmer now and oils can properly lubricate the metal on metal working parts.
  • Vacuum lint from dryer vent – this will help keep your dryer running optimally and prevent fire.
  • Replace interior and exterior faucet and shower head washers if needed – water leaks are not just simply annoying but are costly over the course of the month and year if they are not taken care of.
  • Maintain yard growth – obtain this by regularly mowing the lawn and edged, and trimming bushes.
  • Spray for unwanted bugs and pests, like mosquitoes – you can do this by purchasing a pest spray from a store like Home Depot or your local hardware store, or you can hire a pest company and they will take care of it for you. We personally hire a company to take care of this and it has saved us a lot of hassle.
  • Clean up cobwebs and dead bugs on windows – this will keep them from baking onto the window but also to make it easy to open the windows and keep your home looking nice.
