April Home Maintenance Tips

Spring is here and it is time to freshen up the home to prepare for the warmer season. Use these practical tips to keep your home maintained, fresh, and healthy. In turn, you will stay healthy. A good way to keep the value of your home up is to keep it maintained.

  • Have air-conditioning system serviced – better to have this done now before a hot day and your condenser decides to stop working. (been there!)
  • Refinish the deck – warm days are the best to refinish your deck. Even if it is just a yearly seal, it will keep your deck preserved and ready to enjoy all spring and summer long.
  • Repair caulking and weather stripping around windows and doors – the harsh winter weather takes a toll on door and window seals. Now is a good time to repair them to prepare for the spring rain and summer heat.
  • Seal tile grout – during the year our homes expand and contract causing grout to crack. By repairing and sealing the grout, it will prevent water damage and keep it looking clean.
  • Remove insulation from outdoor faucets and check sprinkler heads – prepare to water the plants and fill the kid’s swimming pool. It is also a good idea to flush the pipe to make sure nothing has settled and could get in your hose.
  • Drain or flush water heater – the health of your system ensures less damage to the interior of the water heater. This keeps it fresh and healthy.
  • Vacuum refrigerator and freezer coils and empty and clean drip trays – throughout the year, and especially after the heating season, dust collects on the coils. This reduces its efficiency to move the refrigerant through the coils. By cleaning them your refrigerator and freezer work optimally.
  • Fertilize your lawn – the best time to do this is the spring. The days are not hot yet and there is a good amount of rain, without you having to water it yourself. The other ideal time to fertilize your lawn is in the fall.
